On The Road is a part-travelogue and part-memoir novel by Jack Kerouac relating his journey across America with his friends. Summary of the Book When Sal Paradise’s life is turned around with his divorce, he is disheartened with life. At this period, he encounters Dean Moriarty. Moriarty is a free-spirited man, full of a sense of adventure. He becomes a catalyst for Sal’s own change into a wanderer who learns to live life to the fullest. Sal travels to Denver and joins Carlo Marx, Moriarty and their friends for a short time full of parties. He then travels to San Francisco, where he meets Remi Boncoeur and his girlfriend Lee Ann. Covering the years from 1947 to 1950, this novel describes John Kerouac’s own travels across North America, and is a unique portrait of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations.
